Posits that the ring shout is the beginning of voluntary creative Black American culture and out of it other major aspects of Black culture, language, thought, movement and religiosity evolve. Further, the writer shows how the ring shout contributed to the origin of Black Nationalist thinking and Pan-Africanism. Very compelling. I learned a lot reading this book. One surprise is that I did not know that some early Black bougies did not think Negro Spirituals were appropriate expressions as Christian songs. Also this book shifted my views of WEB Dubois, introduced me to the radicalism of David Walker, and fleshed out my views of Paul Robeson. Speaking as a Black American artist, I found this book very powerful. A useful resource for Black Aesthetics."
