Concise Handbook of Literary And Rhetorical Terms Michael S Mills 9780615769707 Books Reviews
- I think this book is pretty much what it says it is, which is a book that defines many of the literary and rhetorical terms or concepts a student in high school or college may encounter. What stands out for this book is the wide range of concepts that are broken down into various categories, such as literary periods, criticism, syntax, sound devices, poetry, elements of drama, literary devices, etc. So, this book is very useful as a resource for any student taking AP Language or AP Literature, or any college course that requires understanding of these terms. I guess the only knock is that while the book presents the definitions, it doesn't give much on why, or for what purpose, a devices or concept might be used. It is a great resource for defining many terms though.
And, it is a good resource that high school students and college students should pick up. - I teach 6-8th grade literacy, and my students are required to have this book for my class. This is like the Ultimate English lover's BIBLE. It is so extensive and my students love it! (But not as much as I DO!) I highly recommend this--it is relatable for today's student and very useful!!!
Value exceeds the price! I told my students they should keep this for college English courses! - My book was everything I hoped it would be. My biggest concern was would I have it in the time that I needed it. put my fears to rest, my book arrived in a very timely manner and the price was second to none. I will always order my books from , there is no better way to purchase your books.
A very satisfied customer,
Kim Boyd - This is a student-friendly, easy-to-use literary terms handbook. Dr. Mills provides concise definitions and interesting, and often humorous, examples that the students enjoy reading. I keep a copy behind my desk, and I've given a copy away as a gift to another English teacher. It is so beneficial to have in the classroom; I often wonder how I lived without it. It is so nice to have so many definitions in one source without having to shuffle through a giant textbook that gives mile-long, complex definitions. Great source to have on hand!
- This is a great book. Just the right size for regular classroom use. I put it in my Student Resource Center so that my AP Language and Composition students may refer to it whenever necessary for clarification or definitions. Dr. Mills has invested a great deal of time, research, and organization in order to provide this invaluable tool for all educators.
- I use this handbook frequently. It's been a godsend as I no longer have to reference a dozen other sources to find definitions and examples of key literary terms. The bonus is that I've learned some things along the way, terms like "perclusio," something I've been guilty of for decades sans the Latin-sounding(or whatever--it's all Greek to me) tag. Now I can confess my rhetorical tendency precisely and with proper pronunication, as Mills also includes the pronunciation key. Love it!
- I found this handbook to be an excellent resource for my class. In fact, I keep it right beside my desk so that I can access it any time. The author did a very thorough job; the book covers everything from the simple to the very complex and includes information that I've seen nowhere else. I think every English teacher should have one!
- This text is almost useless as a reference book in e book form because it does not have an active table of contents. The information may be excellent but I didn't look further than the first page.
